You’ve probably heard the coined term “going green” before. Nowadays, It’s everywhere. In the news, in politics, even in fashion and technology. So how do you get started? Luckily, there are SO many ways to go green. What makes it even better, you don’t have to drop a bunch of cash to do so either. Fortunately, every small bit helps in a really big way. Here are 5 things you can do to kick-start your families going green initiative.
1. Stop Junk Mail
Think about it, how much of your mail comes out of the mailbox and goes straight into the trash? For us, it’s majority. Junk mail is not only a hassle but its also a complete waste of paper, ink and even plastic. So for your monthly bills, magazines, and newspapers, opt for paper-free billing and subscriptions. You’ll save yourself some time and also help the trees, too!
2. Give Up Bottled Water
I’m sure you’ve heard all about the terror of plastic. It kills wildlife, marine life, and everything in between. Recycling definitely helps, but unfortunately doesn’t solve these problems completely. If possible, try to switch out your plastic water bottles for a stainless steel tumbler. It will save you money over time and even keep your water chilled all day!
3. Buy The Right Bulb
Whether you’re super picky on your home’s lighting or not, this is a huge contributor to a healthy environment. You don’t have to go out and replace all your light bulbs today, but keep it in mind when one goes out. Start by just replacing one or two light bulbs with halogen light bulbs. Not only are these light bulbs cheaper, they’re way more efficient, too!
4. Pull The Plug
If you’re not using something – unplug it! Especially when it comes to appliances. You may not be able to unplug everything, but if it’s not being used, why waste the energy? This includes cell phone chargers, laptops, even your microwave or toaster! This tiny step can make a huge difference in energy usage, which means cheaper electric bills.
5. Seal Things Up
Good ole’ air conditioning can leak everywhere. Remember when you were younger and your parents told you to roll up the window before all the cold air blows out? Yep, that happens fairly often. Air can leak from doors, cracks in your windows, even from electric outlets! If you notice a lot of cracks around your house, consider hiring some professional help to seal your home and keep it efficiently running.
We all need to take responsibility for the environment and do what we can to help. Don’t forget to reduce, reuse, and recycle, too! So what are some of the ways your family has gone green? Leave your comments below!
