Refashioning For The Children

03/31/14 | Advice, Mom

RefashioningIn the craftivist culture that has quickly taken over, everything is at the palms of our creative hands, from interior decorating, jewelry making, and clothing. We know people that have been making their own clothes and jewelry and creating their own house decorations for forever, but there’s something about the internet that makes everything seem that much simpler.

A blog called Refashionista features a woman and her reader’s transformations of drab clothing that at first glance seem unwearable. A friend told us that refashioning, making the unwearable wearable, was a huge part of her childhood as her mom would take dad’s grease stained jeans, and cut them up into dresses for her and her sister.

Think about the possibilities of doing this for your own children. Parents know better than anyone how quickly kids outgrow, ruin and plummet through clothing. By taking on the task of sewing, whether that’s through taking a class at a craft store like JoAnn Fabrics, dusting off that old sewing machine in the attic, or taking advantage of the multitude of online classes offered through websites such as craftsy.com, you can maximize the clothing that you already had, rather than constantly running out to replenish kids’ clothes.

The possibilities are endless. You could piece together outgrown fabrics to make new garments, or give new life to those jeans that ripped during recess. Whether it’s the 1900s or 2050, sewing is an amazing resource that takes shopping to an entirely different level for the entire family!
