Every year it seems like our to-do lists get longer. There’s more counters to clean, more toys to put away, and more dinners to cook. The concept of getting your kiddos to pitch in seems like a great idea but where do you even start? If you’re looking for some tips on how to get your kiddos to start learning some responsibility, we’ve created a great chore system based on your kiddos ages.
Ages 2-3
For your super tiny ones, chores are really just a way of teaching them a small glimpse of responsibility and accountability. Try to lighten your own load and get them to help out with the small stuff! If it makes you more comfortable, they can always grab an older sibling to start!
- Laundry in the washer
- Toy cleanup
- Put away books
- Help feed pets
- Throw away trash
Ages 4-7
The older your kiddos get the more chores they can help out with! As they’re getting ready to start pre-school here are some things they can help with around the house
- Set up the table
- Make their bed
- Clear the dinner table
- Switch laundry
- Help put away groceries
Ages 8-10
Once your kiddos get a little bit older they can absolutely help with more things around the house! They might have needed a little help before but now can do those things on their own and more.
- Clean their rooms
- Take out the trash
- Rake leaves
- Empty the dishwasher
- Bring in the mail
Ages 11 +
By the time your kids are in middle school, they’re interested in independence and growing up. This is a great time to give them larger chores. Whether it’s complete household tasks or doing a little bit of everything, it can make a huge difference in your daily workload.
- Help clean the kitchen
- Walk the dog
- Mow the lawn
- Do laundry
- Pack their lunch
