Basic Necessities for the Beginner Yogi

03/21/16 | Advice, Mom

yogi

Are you considering beginning the practice of yoga? Committing yourself can be hard, but yoga is well worth it. A Hindu spiritual and ascetic discipline that emphasizes breath control, simple, and meditation, it has many health and relaxation benefits. Many people are proud to call themselves “yogis” and have dedicated themselves to the practice. Though it may be intimidating to go into a class with advanced yogis who are capable of handstands and are flexible in ways you didn’t think were possible, the environment of a good studio is anything but menacing. If you have been considering trying out a class – go for it! All you need is a good mindset, the willingness to rid your mind of any stressful thoughts, and these four essential items!

A Tight Fitting Top

Your shirt doesn’t need to feel like second skin, but yoga involves different poses – many of which you will find yourself with your head down. In order to avoid your top covering your face in downward dog, for example, make sure your shirt fights tight enough. Also, steer clear of cotton and other materials that absorb moisture. This rings especially true during hot yoga where the room temperature ranges from 90 to 117 degrees.

Crop Leggings or Spandex Shorts

Again, try to keep away from baggy clothes that can get in the way of yoga movements. There is no reason your meditation should be interrupted by your foot getting caught by one of your articles of clothing. Instead, wear athletic leggings or shorts made of a moisture-wicking material that is stretchy and breathable. You’ll be extremely glad you did.

Headband

Though not necessary, I find it beneficial to always wear a headband to yoga. Whether you have flyaways that you are constantly fussing with, or have the perfect pony, headbands really complete a yoga outfit. In hot yoga especially, they are ideal for keeping sweat from your forehead or your eyes.

Yoga Mat

Most studios have mats available for free for new clients. But if you’re really motivated to stick with the practice, consider purchasing your own. Mats come in so many fun, bright colors and a few also have designs on them. Express yourself with your mat and feel like you’re one step closer to being an official “yogi”.
