As the summer ends, it is time to start thinking about the upcoming school year! It can be hard to get back in the routine of busy mornings, homework, and long school days. Here are a few easy tips to help your child have a successful school year:
Shopping for school supplies
It can be hard to get excited to go back to school after a fun and relaxing summer. Plan a shopping trip for school supplies. Let your child pick out his backpack and supplies in the colors and styles he prefers. After the trip, let him open his supplies and personalize his items.
Stay organized
Help your child organize his assignments and materials with folders and binders designated for each subject. Color-coded tabs labeled for homework, classwork and notes are a great way to keep your child’s papers together and easy to find. A planner is good for keeping up with due dates and school events. Having your child pack his book bag each night and place by the door will help on busy mornings.
Healthy meals
It’s important for your child to get a good nutritious breakfast and lunch. The school days can be tiring. Make sure your child is getting plenty of fuel and energy from his meals. Protein is a long-lasting energy source that will help your child power through long school days. Sugary foods should be kept to a minimum as these tend to give a sugar high and then a crash soon after.
Extra-curricular activities or hobby
Encourage your child to find an activity or hobby, whether it is playing a sport, taking an art class, or learning an instrument. Participating in an extracurricular activity is a good outlet for your child and gives him a break from the books. It is also a good way to meet friends who have the same interest. Be cautious not to put your child in too many extracurricular activities. The time restraints of too many activities could be stressful to you and your child.
Stay in the Know
It is important to communicate with your child daily. Ask about his school day, be present in the conversation, encourage your child to problem solve when faced with a challenge. Be supportive, but do not take control. Communication with your child’s teachers is also extremely important. Keep open communication, get involved in school events, and volunteer in the classroom.
Spend Time Together
Life gets busy, but spending quality time will strengthen your relationship. When cooking dinner, have your child read to you, help with measuring ingredients, or just talk about the day. Always work quality family time into your schedule.
The school year can be crazy! Use these easy tips to get ahead of the chaos and get ready for the exciting things to come during the year!
