One of my absolute favorite parts of my childhood were family traditions. No matter what was going on in our lives, good or bad, we always made time for each other. Some of my absolute favorite holiday memories come from family traditions and it’s something I’ve always promised myself I would instill in my family, too! But figuring out new and exciting family traditions can be tough. Your kiddos get bored quickly and grow out of certain activities. So what’s a mom to do? Create new family traditions! We’ve rounded up our 5 favorite family traditions, to keep your family tight-knit and close together.
Talking About Our Day
Every night at dinner we talk about what we did that day, how it went, what we liked, what we didn’t like. I really try to encourage everyone to point out a specific high point of their day and a specific low point of their day. It’s a great way to get to know my family better and understand what they’re struggling with and what they’re doing well.
Once a week, we will hold family meetings to discuss everything going on that week. For me and my husband, that means budgeting. For us and the kids, that means talking about school projects, sporting events, etc. It’s a great opportunity to make sure everyone is on the same page!
Family Fun Night
One night a week, I like to sit my kiddos down and ask them what they want to do. Every week we aim for a different activity, whatever they want. But I really try to aim this to be an educational activity. Since our other family traditions are usually centered around fun and excitement, I try to include one day where we can learn something together!
Lunch at Work
Every other week, we have lunch at my office, and the other week we have lunch at my husband’s. For some crazy reason, my kiddos feel like it’s a mini-vacation. They love this part of the week and bother me about it all weekend long. It’s a great time to show your family where you work, what you do, and everything in between!
Every Saturday, we opt for a night in. That means pizza, popcorn, soda, and movies. Our kiddos love to pick out their favorite movies and we love getting to let loose and just enjoy spending time with each other. This is one of our favorite nights because we all get to enjoy our time together and enjoy a movie with some sweet snacks!
