3 Family Activities Inspired by Winter Weather

It can be really tough to be stuck inside all day during the winter. When that time rolls around, it’s the perfect opportunity to focus on some fun family activities that you can do indoors! We’ve picked some of our favorite indoor activities that will be fun for the entire family. Luckily, these crafts include supplies that you can find lying around your house so you don’t have to deal with the harsh winter temperatures! Here’s how to get started on our favorite family activities.

6-Sided Snowflake

Start with a square piece of paper. First, fold your square into a triangle. Next, fold your triangle into a smaller triangle. Then fold your triangle into thirds. Draw a diagonal line about half way up your triangle, then cut at an angle. Next, throw away the top half, so you’re left with a small skinny triangle. Finally, trace your favorite designs on the bottom half of the triangle, from above and cut. Carefully unfold and admire your beautiful snowflake!

Pipe Cleaner Snowflake Stamps

Cut a 12 inch pipe cleaner into 3 pieces of equal size (4 inches). Hold the 3 pieces together by making an “x” and one pipe cleaner in the middle.  Tightly wrap a new pipe cleaner around the middle of the bundle, twisting its ends to secure it. Twist the middle pipe cleaner to form a handle like shape. Straighten out the 3 pipe cleaners to form a six-sided snowflake shape. You can also make another snowflake design by adding pipe cleaner to the ends. Cut 2 inch pieces from another pipe cleaner. Twist the pieces on the sides of the snowflake as shown. Pipe cleaner Snowflake ready to stamp. Then dip the snowflakes in paint and stamp!

Wooden Snowmen

1.  Each snowman requires seven jumbo craft sticks.  Five for the head, one for the hat, and one to hold the whole thing together.  Lay five craft sticks vertically in a row together and break or cut the sixth stick in half.  Put hot glue on the cut pieces and lay horizantally across the five sticks pressing the sticks in firmly so they are super close to each other.  Repeat the other half of the sixth stick.
2. Paint the top third black and the bottom third white. You may have to help out the kiddos and touch up their paint jobs. Paint the remaining stick black.
3. Hot glue a ribbon around the bottom of the painted black area.
4. Glue the painted black stick right below the ribbon or slightly on top of it to complete the hat.
5. Next it’s time to add the googly eyes, an orange felt nose, and use the Sharpie to make the mouth.  Easy!
6. The last step is to glue a ribbon onto the back for a hanger.

Each of one of these crafts are great for indoor fun this winter. Not only are these great activities for kids, but they really are great for family activities too!
